Sour hydrocarbon service is unforgiving of shortcuts. Wet H₂S in the presence of chlorides or elevated temperature drives sulfide stress cracking in the wrong alloy, and a heat exchanger that looked identical on a general arrangement drawing can fail in eighteen months or run clean for two decades — the difference is almost always material selection made correctly at the design stage, not maintenance practice afterward.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 sets hardness limits and permitted alloy families for any component wetted by a sour hydrocarbon stream — tubesheets, tubes, channel covers, gaskets and bolting all fall under its scope. It is not a corrosion-allowance calculation; it is a pass/fail material qualification. A carbon steel tubesheet that would be entirely adequate on general corrosion grounds can still be non-compliant if its post-weld heat treatment leaves hardness above the NACE threshold in the heat-affected zone.

Beyond corrosion, sour crude and associated gas streams carry iron sulfide scale that deposits preferentially at low-velocity zones — baffle windows, tube inlet/outlet transitions, and stagnant corners of the shell. API 660 addresses this with minimum baffle-cut and tube-velocity guidance specifically aimed at keeping shell-side flow fast enough to limit deposition, but no design entirely eliminates fouling in sour service; it only sets the interval between mechanical cleanings.
Oil & gas turnarounds run on fixed schedules measured in days, not weeks. An exchanger specified without full bundle-pull access, or with a channel cover that requires specialist rigging, turns a routine inspection into a schedule risk for the entire unit.
