A pressure vessel that meets ASME Section VIII Division 1 on paper is not the same as one that can prove it during an operator audit five years into service. The documentation package a fabricator hands over at delivery is what makes that proof possible — and it is worth qualifying before award, not after a vessel is already on site.
An ASME U-stamp confirms the fabricator holds a valid Certificate of Authorization and that the vessel was built under an ASME-accepted quality control system. It does not, on its own, tell an operator whether the specific vessel’s material certificates, weld maps and NDT records are complete and traceable — that comes down to what the fabricator actually assembles into the data book.

ADNOC-approved vendor status and similar operator qualification schemes require a fabricator to produce full traceability on demand, not just at time of delivery. Vessels procured from suppliers who treat the data book as a delivery formality rather than a permanent audit-ready record create real operational risk for the operator years later, at exactly the moment a clean record is needed most — during an incident investigation or a re-rating exercise.
