Choosing between hydrojetting and chemical cleaning is really a question about what’s actually fouling the tubes. Get the diagnosis wrong and you either waste a cleaning cycle that doesn’t touch the deposit, or use a method aggressive enough to damage tube metallurgy that didn’t need it.

High-pressure water jetting physically dislodges loose deposits without introducing any chemical into the system — the main variable to control is jetting pressure relative to tube wall thickness and alloy, since excessive pressure on thin-wall or softer alloy tubing risks erosion. Correctly specified, it is the faster and lower-risk option for sediment, mud and loosely-adhered scale.
Hard mineral scale — calcium carbonate, iron oxide, certain biofilms — often resists mechanical removal entirely, or would require pressures that risk the tube wall. A circulated chemical clean dissolves the deposit rather than dislodging it, but the chemistry must be matched to both the deposit type and the tube alloy: an acid formulation safe for carbon steel can attack a duplex or titanium tube if left uncontrolled on pH and inhibitor dosing.

In practice, many fouling conditions call for a combination — a chemical soak to loosen hardened scale followed by a hydrojet pass to clear the loosened material — rather than a single method in isolation. The right sequence is decided during the pre-cleaning inspection, not assumed from the exchanger type alone.
